Book Reviews for beginners
Blog Entry Written By: Nikita
Book reviews can sometimes be a daunting thing, especially whenever you’ve never done one before. There are key factors to keep in mind whenever you are getting ready to make one, and there is going to be a difference between graphics for social media, videos, and the written ones you leave across Goodreads, Fable, Amazon, etc. All of them have a few things in common, a five star rating, the genre of the book, and the tropes. As long as you hit those three basics you’re pretty much good to go. However, it’s also important to keep in mind that whenever someone is checking reviews of a book, we’re not looking for a summary of the book, we’re looking for something the author does not give us. We can find the summary in the blurb, that’s easy for us to get. What we want to know is how this book made you feel. Did you read it in one sitting because you simply were not able to put it down? Did it have you kicking and screaming in excitement? Did the book have you crying uncontrollably because how dare that author do that to you (that’s right I’m talking to you Sabreena). Whenever you make graphics for social media, you don’t really want them to be too busy. For example, if you add your full review to the graphic, not a lot of people are going to want to stop and read that because it just seems like a lot of information that’s given. So if you add the cover of the book to help snag attention, maybe even your rating, and then in the caption you can add your review and all the finer details. Video reviews are a whole different ball field. You want to be quick about them, because if you think about it, while you’re scrolling through on social media how willing are you to watch a long video on a book that doesn’t grab you right away with something. Doing the trends that you see all over your FYP is also a great method. Think back to the videos you’ve saved before about books, what made you stop to watch them in the first place to save them? Then most importantly, make sure you are being authentically you in your review, use your own words, be your own unique self.
